Robert Wiene’s THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (1920, 67 min) not only paved the way for the dark postwar heyday of film noir but also planted seeds of macabre surrealism that carries on today, notably in the chiaroscuro works of David Lynch. The mother lode of the horror genre, this German Expressionist movie presents a full smorgasbord of pop-eyed terror, lunatics, murderers and possessed somnambulists in its eerie shadows.
