Phnom Penh Underground

Cambodia Underground Club Guide 3rd April 2014

Last weekend was another stormer, clubwise – HighRise (pictures and videos here) ruled the roost once again with a proper warehouse vibe – albeit on a rooftop above Phnom Penh.

Elsewhere, we heard great reports from TechPenh and from Pontoon, where this weeks cover star, Iam FeralisKinky gave a typically exuberant performance….

Ok, so lets have a look at this weekend – too many nights to mention here, so we’re going to concentrate on the one-off nights – for the full line-up with all the fantastic regular nights, check our events calendar

beats gui On Friday, over at MetaHouse, Beats against Corruption brings you Cambodia’s first anti-corruption club night! With Phnom Penh-based Khmer and non-Khmer live performers and DJs, this promises to be a very special night! Expect lumanaries such as Kosal Khiev, Bboy Peanut, Java & Stitch (in one of their last ever performances) & Simon C Vent.
frankiegui In honour of the sad passing of the Godfather of House, Mr Frankie Knuckles, DJ’s Alan Ritchie and Ken_C will pay homage to him though his music and the legacy of house music that he helped create in Chicago on The Terrace.
westgui Meanwhile, over at Code, prepare to get shizzled up West Coast style with DJ WhatDaFrog (Bangkok). Expect classics from the likes of Snoop, Dre, NWA as well as the latest bangers!
ragggui Finally over at the Slur Bar, the Wat A Gwaan crew are vibing it up with a combination of live sounds from VibraTone alongside Selectors D Tonn and Polaak and MCs Kaztet Dee and Theo. Expect good vibes and chanting down Babylon.

gapgui Saturday is all about Mind The Gap – 3 of Phnom Penh’s biggest underground names – Simon C Vent, Dan Beck & DJ Sequence, will be laying down the best in House, Garage and DnB. There’s free flow Singha Beer for only $5 between 10&12 as well as loads of give-aways – should be a crazy night!
kimgui High above the city, under the stars on the Terrace, The Kimchi Collective will be laying down their normal beats of distinction and excellence to a clued up party crowd. Expect a lot of love on the dancefloor!
goagui Finally, over at the MetaHouse, our latest DJ Profile star, Mr Brown will be busting out the trance at Goa is a State of Mind. He’ll mix dark banging Goa and Psy Trance ,accompanied by DJs Oggy, Jo & Nick. One for all you TranceHeadz.

roof 2 regular nights to mention – every Wednesday finds Sir Alan Ritchie busting out some serious Reggae, Roots, Rocksteady, Ska & Dub on the Rooftop Terrace of DUSK till DAWN. Good vibes, Good company, Skanking beats!
chapekgui Every Sunday, come worship at The Chapel – “A sensoral pleasure palace of flesh, occupied by some of the most alarming exhibitionists and gender terrorists of our times” with beats provide by provided by Rob Bianchetti and Alan Ritchie.

Well, if you have any energy after that lot, looking towards next weekend and beyond, the calendar’s full of amazing events. As always, please let me know about underground events in PP, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, Kampot and beyond via our Facebook page or the website.

2 upcoming events to look out for:

watagui On the 12th of April, make your way down to the NagaHouse in Kampot, where the Wat a Gwaan crew will be laying down some serious reggae and Dub beats down by the river – the perfect way to unwind!
fullgui Finally on the 15th, its the always excellent Full Moon Party on Koh Rong Saloem. After last month’s amazing edition (video here), this month is sure to be bigger and better than ever with special guest Simon C Vent alongside the usual crew-  highly recommended!

As I said at the top, loads of great events happening this weekend – for more details, check our events calendar and remember – keep it underground

PS – As a tribute to the recently departed Frankie Knuckles, what better than to show him doing what he did best – rocking a crowd. R.I.P
